Aviemore for the Perfect Watersports Holiday
You may think of Aviemore as being the perfect winter sports destination (and in our opinion it is!) but it’s also a great location if you’re looking to enjoy a watersports holiday. The surrounding area offers great opportunities to try a whole variety of activities that you may already be an experienced hand at or that you may just be looking to cross off your list of things to try! Let us guide you through a few of the options.
Whitewater Rafting or River Tubing at Rothiemurchus
Rothiemurchus estate contains some of the most beautiful scenery to be found in the whole of Scotland but it offers a lot more than just the chance of a pleasant stroll or relaxing bike ride. The estate is the venue for a whole range of activities, including white water rafting and river tubing. Rafting is graded from 1 to 6 in levels of difficulty, with 6 being the most challenging. Different grades of experience are available at Rothiemurchus, from Family Rafting (suitable for ages 5 and up) to Fun River Rapids (classed as a grade 2) and White Water Rafting which is classed as grade 4+.
River Tubing originates in North America and offers a more sedate experience than the rafting that we’ve just mentioned. You can float down a lovely Highland mountain stream from the comfort of your own specially designed river tube, complete with a padded seat! All of the safety gear you require is supplied and even non-swimmers are welcome so long as this (or being a weak swimmer) is disclosed to the instructor before the session begins.
Canoeing or Kayaking at Loch Morlich
Loch Morlich is only a few miles from Aviemore and has a specialist watersports centre offering many different ways to enjoy the waters of this beautiful loch. Among them are canoeing and kayaking, for which lessons and equipment hire are available for both adults and children. A day course for families which combines kayaking with windsurfing is also available, costing £170 per day for a family of 2 adults and 2 children (Prices are also available for different sizes of family group).
Sailing or windsurfing at Loch Insh
Sometimes you just want to feel the wind in your sails, so why not pop over to Loch Insh to enjoy their fantastic sailing or windsurfing facilities? In fact, the watersports centre there was voted the ‘best on the water facility in Scotland’. Located just 7 miles from Aviemore, their lessons range from a private one-hour session up to courses of 1-5 days in length...depending on just how much you want to develop your skills! Courses and equipment are available for both children and adults.
Go Canyoning in the Cairngorms
If you’re really craving an adrenaline rush then few things can compete with canyoning (known as canyoneering in America). It offers a combination of different outdoor activities, including walking, climbing and swimming so you certainly won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything! Trying canyoning in the Cairngorms means sampling a range of thrills, from jumping into rock pools to swimming under waterfalls. All this in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland, it’s an experience you will never forget. Canyoning days are available from Full On Adventure.
