Posted by Hilton Coylumbridge, September, 2016

The Cairngorm Adventure Triathlon – or CAT – is a fun and challenging event that takes place throughout the Cairngorms National Park. The triathlon event involves a 3km Canadian canoe race around Loch Morlich, a 25km mountain bike race on forest trails and roads, and finally a 5km trail run on loch-side forestry trails.

The event attracts both skilled triathletes and amateurs looking to have fun and raise some money for charity.  CAT 2016 will be the 10th anniversary of the event and is sure to attract over 100 teams on Saturday 26th September.

All proceeds from the event go towards supporting young local athletes in the Cairngorms National Park area. A total of £11,800 has been raised to help young people progress in their chosen sport. Previous grant winners include a windsurfer, a mountain biker, a rugby player, snowboarders and more.

The Route

  • The 3km canoe route goes around Loch Morlich
  • The 5km run is a forest route directly around Loch Morlich
  • The 25km cycle route goes through Glenmore Forest Park, then along An Slugan, West Croftmore, Pitylouish, Coylumbridge and back to Rothiemurchas

The Day

There is parking at Loch Morlich, although it may be limited if you don’t get there early. Registration for the event starts at 8.30am in the gazebo beside Loch Morlich Watersports. At 10.30am there will be a Race Briefing and Heat 1 begins at 11am with following heats beginning at approximately 45-minute intervals. Race results and prizes will be given at 4.30pm.

There will be food and drinks served after the event, and Portaloos will be on-site.

The Prizes

All competitors will receive a useful item for their efforts in the triathlon. There will also be team prizes for first male team, first female team, first mixed team, first junior team and the first team who live within the Cairngorms National Park. There will also be special 10th anniversary prizes given out to athletes who have completed every CAT since 2007.
