Discover Tropical Butterflies in Aviemore

Posted by Hilton Coylumbridge, June, 2017

Butterflies are a much-loved staple of British summertime, reminding us of lazy picnics and days spent outdoors. However, they’re notoriously hard to get close to – as anyone who's tried to catch one in their hands will know!

Landmark Forest Adventure Park, just eight miles from Hilton Coylumbridge, is home to an amazing butterfly house and offers an opportunity for families to get up close to these unique, transformative creatures.

You’ll be surrounded by brightly coloured butterflies as you wander through the climate-controlled house. Play and learn as you find out about species from all over the world – pick up a helpful chart as you walk in to help you spot the different varieties. Not just for kids, this activity is as awe-inspiring as it is educational.

Each butterfly roams free through the foliage in the purpose-built house as they feed on the nectar from the stunning tropical flowers on display. Look out for the brand new Asian Quail, recently added to the collection.

Take a look at the caterpillar-to-butterfly life cycle as you stop by the hatching cabinet. Witness a chrysalis open to reveal a brand new butterfly taking its first flight. Get down early, as the best time to see butterflies emerging from their pupae is between 10am-1pm.

Did you know?

  • Butterflies can't hear, but they can feel vibrations.
  • Butterflies taste with their feet and smell with their antennae.
  • Millions of iridescent overlapping scales give butterfly wings their colour.
  • Butterflies don't have lungs, but breathe through openings on their abdomen called 'spiracles'.

Landmark Forest Adventure isn’t just home to this amazing attraction. This themepark – consistently voted one of Scotland’s favourite kids’ leisure destinations – also offers rock climbing, skydiving simulation, flume riding, and much more.
