Enjoy a Great Family Day Out at the Aviemore Sled Dog Rally 2015
Why not tackle the January blues by planning an exciting day out that the whole family can look forward to? One idea for an unforgettable day trip is to come and see what the 32nd Aviemore Sled Dog Rally is all about! The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday the 24th and 25th of January and is a great happening for the whole family – whether you’ve got a passion for sled dogs or not.
General info about the event
The rally is organised by The Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain, and has been so every year since 1984. In the beginning there were only 12 teams taking part in the race, whereas the rally now is the largest event of its kind in Britain with over 1,000 sled dogs and 250 mushers! A “musher” is the driver of a sled dog in case you’re wondering.
The race takes place on the forest trails around beautiful Loch Morlich just next to Glenmore whether there is snow or not - if there’s no snow the mushers will just use a three-wheeled rig instead of a sled.
The competition features teams consisting of two to eight dogs on trails between four to seven miles long. All in all there are eight classes for adults and two for children and the mushers can be as young as eight or as old as 60. The dogs could be racing past you at speeds of 25 mph and more, so be careful not to venture out on the trail and keep your dog away as well if you’re bringing your pet.
Although the event is organised by The Siberian Husky Club the rally will feature other breeds of dogs that have traditionally been bred to pull sleds in the Arctic, such as Alaskan Malamutes, Greenland dogs and Canadian Eskimo dogs.
The races don’t start until the 24th, but you can enjoy the company of sled dogs already on Friday the 23rd of January at the Hilton Coylumbridge Hotel. A dog weight pulling competition will be taking place all day, from 10.30 onwards, at the tennis courts on the hotel grounds. From 5pm onwards there will be a musher’s market in the hotel as well.
On Saturday the rally starts with the first heat of the Junior Musher’s Rally at 8.30am, followed by the Main Rally at 9.15am.
Sunday will be kicked off with the second heat of the Junior Musher’s Rally at 8.30 and also the second heat of the Main Rally at 9.15. See more event details here.
