FREE Family Activities in Aviemore

Posted by Hilton Coylumbridge, February, 2016

Getting away with the kids can be expensive – especially when it comes to keeping them entertained. So, with the school holidays almost upon us, here are our top five free activities for families visiting Aviemore.

Family Picnic at Loch an Eilein

Voted ‘Britain’s best picnic spot’ in 2010, Loch an Eilein, with its 13th-century castle in the centre of the loch, is a wonderful setting the whole family can enjoy. After tucking into your sandwiches, explore the surrounding woodlands and you might catch a glimpse of some red squirrels and Scottish crossbills.

Cycling Around Aviemore

Kids bored? On your bike! You’ll find plenty of cycle paths around Aviemore well suited to families who want to keep off the road. Choose from three circular cycle paths in the Rothiemurchus estate, all featuring breathtaking mountain views. Pick up a free copy of the Rotheimurchus Bike Map, which points out ancient battle sites and flora and fauna along your route.

Highland Folk Museum

Take your family on a journey back in time at the Highland Folk Museum. The museum brings to life the domestic and working conditions of Highland communities from the 1700s to the 1960s. Discover a 1700s township with six houses, a working croft and over 10,000 artefacts of times gone by.

Camera Obscura

Kids into science will love the Camera Obscura at CairnGorm Mountain. It’s basically a more complex version of a pinhole camera, which projects a stunning image of the mountain setting onto a screen in a darkened room. It’s worth a stop if you’re in the area!

Free Kids’ Club at The Fun House

If you’re staying with as at Hilton Coylumbridge, kids over five can attend free supervised play sessions in The Fun House between 7pm and 9pm. For more details, ask at reception when you check in (may not operate in low season).
