Get Fit In the Cairngorms This Autumn - No Excuses!

Posted by Hilton Coylumbridge, September, 2015

So once again, you’ve found yourself at the tail-end of another summer where your plans to get fit and healthy somehow never materialised. You sought and found every excuse in the world to keep putting off that new healthy living regime over and over again, but if it makes you feel any better, you’re far from in the minority!

The way we see it though, there’s technically no such thing as the ‘wrong’ time of year to get in shape. In fact, there are plenty of reasons why the autumn represents quite simply the best season of all in which to focus on getting fit. It’s not so hot outside, the kids are back at school and if you decide to take a well-earned break, chances are you’ll make great savings. And what’s more, with so many fantastic events taking place in the Cairngorms this autumn, there’s really no better time to get active and no excuse not to.

Hills & Trails Race

First up, the incredible Cairngorms Hills & Trails Race will once again take place on the 4th of October this year and looks set to be the most enjoyable and rewarding one in the event’s history. Once again, those taking part will start out at The Hayfield Glenmore village and complete their run at Glenmore Lodge National Outdoor Training Centre. There will be a choice of two routes – one stretching a challenging 21km and the other a slightly less-daunting 11km. In both instances however, a variety of terrain will be encountered along the way including exposed hilltops, boulder fields, muddy trials, forest tracks and some steep inclines. Some of the more remote locations along the route will be watched over by marshals, but this is nonetheless a run suitable only for those of excellent health and experience in similar events.

Aviemore Half Marathon & 10K

Considered the jewel in the crown of all outdoor events for athletic types around the Cairngorms, the Aviemore Half Marathon & 10K returns to Scotland on October 11th. Billed as perhaps the most exhilarating way of taking in the beauty of the Highlands while keeping your feet firmly on flat tarmac, this year’s event will also feature the incredibly popular 10K route. The event is held as a means by which to raise money for the Speyside Trust Badaguish Centre by Aviemore and pulls in professional and amateur runners from all over the country.

Petal Power ‘Ride Like a Grrl’ 2015

Last but not least, Petal Power Biking was set up in 2012 for the sole purpose of encouraging as many women as possible to get out and about on their bicycles, regardless of their ability levels or the weather conditions. The annual Ride like a Grrl event is widely considered one of the most enjoyable and inspiring of all, allowing those taking part to take in the outstanding scenery around them while completing a genuinely challenging route. Once again, there will be the choice of an Epic Route for experienced riders and an Adventure Route for newcomers and intermediates – 35km and 26km respectively.
