Ready for Teddy Bear Weekend?
It can sometimes be tough to find a day out that both you and the kids will enjoy but, thankfully, this May the Strathspey Railway in Aviemore has got it covered! This beautiful railway line will be holding their annual Teddy Bear Weekend from May 3rd to 5th (the May bank holiday weekend) and it’s the perfect way for you to enjoy the sights, sounds and history of the Highlands all in one. We should probably tell you a little bit more about the line itself though and why it really does make for such a special day out.
The History of the Strathspey Railway
Currently, the railway operates along a 10 mile stretch of track running from Aviemore to Broomhill via Boat of Garten. This is part of what was originally the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway (which celebrated its 150th anniversary last year) and later became part of the Highland Railway which linked Aviemore and Forres. Only a small number of lines of this type have remained preserved in the UK.
The people who have made the preservation of the line possible are all those involved in the Strathspey Railway Association, who are the biggest shareholder in the Strathspey Railway Company. Most of the the people who work on the line are volunteers from the association and, although they’ve already achieved a fantastic amount, they’re not resting on their laurels. Plans are well underway for the line to be extended to offer journeys between Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey. This will involve three additional miles of track being laid, as well as putting in place a new bridge to cross the River Dulnain. You can see a video of the bridge building process in action on the BBC website.
What can you expect from Teddy Bear Weekend?
Your kids (and you!) will be able to have fun trying to spot all of the teddy bears hidden along the line. It won’t just be a case of keeping your eyes open either, there will be quiz sheets provided which will contain clues as to the location of those cheeky hidden teddies. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the line but don’t despair if you haven’t managed to spot all of them. Everyone taking part in the event will be entered into the railway’s special free prize draw! As if that wasn’t enough reason to take part, children under 5 travel free and all kids bringing a teddy bear travel free too!
Please note that the journeys departing at 11.30 and 13.30 over Teddy Bear Weekend will be run using the railway’s special vintage DMU Diesel engine, rather than their steam one. This allows for a different (but still vintage!) experience.
