Six Hours in Aviemore

Posted by Hilton Coylumbridge, March, 2017

With so much to do and see in Aviemore, it can be difficult to choose where to go in such a short space of time. To help you decide, we have compiled a short list of the best things to see and do on a whistle stop tour of the town.

Visit the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd

The first stop on our itinerary is a visit to see the charming Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, which has been voted the 2nd most popular attraction in Aviemore on TripAdvisor. Located near The Glenmore Centre, you can visit the reindeer herd each day from mid-February until early January.

The tour leaves at 11am during February, March and April and begins with a short drive up to the start of the mountain, where you’ll be met by an experienced reindeer herder. You’ll then spend around 30-minutes walking up the mountain to find the reindeer. The walk is suitable for all ages and abilities as the guides go at a comfortable pace. Once you have reached the herd, you’ll get the opportunity to spend time with them, feeding them, stroking them, and of course, taking some pictures.

The tour lasts around 1-2 hours depending on the weather and costs £14 for adults, and £8 for children over 5 years of age.

Watch the Red Squirrels while Having a Cuppa

After all that walking, you’ll no doubt be in need of a good cup of tea. The Glenmore Café is only a few minutes walk from the visitor centre and has some of the best cakes in Aviemore. This Alpine-style café also has some very cute regular visitors in the form of the charismatic red squirrel, which feed outside the windows of the café. If you're short on time, why not head back to the hotel for a delcious afternoon tea, where you can also spot the red squirrel in the hotel grounds.

After a short break in the café take a drive down to Coylumbridge and try your hand at a range of outdoor adventures at Outdoor Discovery. Located in the grounds of the hotel, there are adventures to suit everyone, from climbing walls and dry ski slopes to quad biking and laser quest. For those who like an adrenaline rush give the newest attraction a go, the Big Air, which sees you fired 14-feet into the air via a harness.
