The Best Way to Spend 24 Hours in Aviemore

Posted by Hilton Coylumbridge, October, 2014

Located in the middle of the enormous Cairngorms National Park, Aviemore is a hub for all kinds of indoor and outdoor activities. The sheer range of activities to choose from can be a bit overwhelming if you’re not familiar with the place at all and you’ve only got a day or two, so to help you out we’ve put together a convenient 24-hour plan that will make sure you get to enjoy some of the best views and experiences whilst staying at Hilton Coylumbridge.

9AM Hilton buffet breakfast

You’ve got a long day ahead, so you need to make sure you get a good hearty breakfast in you before heading off on the day’s adventures. Our famous Hilton breakfast at the Inverdruie Restaurant is just what you need, and with the range of options available there will be something for everyone to fuel up on. Breakfast is served between 7.30am and 10.30am, but aim to finish by 10am so that you have enough time to get to your first stop of the day…

11AM See reindeers up close

At the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre in Glenmore, located only a short 10 minute drive from Aviemore you’ll find the only existing reindeer herd in all of Britain. It would be a shame to come all the way up here without visiting these lovely animals, because where else will you get a chance to do it? The daily year round visit starts at 11am, and takes you up the mountain where the main herd lives. The scenic walk takes around 20 minutes and requires sensible walking shoes and a basic level of fitness. And it’s definitely worth the effort, as at the top you’ll get to feed the reindeer and stay for as long as you want.

Tickets are £13 for adults and £7 for children, but the entry fee also gets you 20% off the Cairngorm funicular railway – which will be your next stop only a 10-minute ride away!

1PM Take a ride on the Cairngorm funicular railway

To really be able to take in the incredible views of the national park and the Scottish Highlands you need to get as high as possible, which you can do by taking the funicular railway up Cairngorm Mountain to 3600 feet (1097 metres) above sea level. This is the longest and highest funicular in the UK, the ride is no less than stunning and the panoramic views at the top are just awe-inspiring. The ride is £10.50 for an adult and £6.80 for a child.

2PM Lunch at the UK’s highest restaurant

After having made friends with reindeer and admired views to die for you will probably be a bit peckish, why you’ll be pleased to know that there is a restaurant at the top of the mountain. The restaurant has recently been renamed from Ptarmigan to 1097 and offers fantastic views over Loch Morlich and surroundings. This café-style place offers reasonably priced, locally sourced food such as burgers, fish and chips and soup as well as delicious cakes for hungry skiers and hikers.

4PM Walk around Loch an Eilein

To help digest your lunch we suggest you drive back to Aviemore and then drive 3 miles south to the picturesque Loch an Eilein on the Rothiemurchus estate. This is a lovely walk at any time of year and especially restful in winter, with ice margins on the loch. In the middle of the loch are the ruins of a small 15th century castle, which unfortunately you can only admire from ashore. The walk around the loch is 4.25 miles long and will take you approximately 2 hours. If you’re running short on time you can also just do part of the walk.

6PM Relax in the pool

After a day outdoors you will probably want to freshen up, so drive back to Hilton Coylumbridge and hit our swimming pool and sauna for a relaxing and invigorating swim session.

8.30PM Dinner at the hotel

Once refreshed after an eventful day, a tasty dinner is in order, and we’ve got a few dining options for you at the hotel that you can familiarise yourself with here. We do recommend you book a table in advance, in particular if you’re a bigger group.

10.30PM Drinks at the Woodshed Bar

If you’re not ready for bed yet, why not pop over to our log cabin-style Woodshed bar for a cheeky wee drink? We’ve got a cosy log fire and local ales and a range of lovely cocktails to choose from.
