The Cheviot Etape Royale Cycle Event
The Quilter Cheviot Etape Royale is the only 100-mile closed road cycle event in Scotland. Get on your bike on the 18th September and take in the glory of Scotland’s north east while putting your stamina to the test!
Cycle through Moray’s Whisky Country and challenge yourself (and your thighs!) with an alpine climb over one of the highest roads in the UK. After enjoying some panoramic views, descend into Aberdeenshire’s Royal Deeside.
There are three routes to choose from: the 100-mile circular route starting in Ballater, the 65-mile linear route starting in Rhynie and the 45-mile linear route starting in Dufftown. All the cycle routes finish up in Ballater, with music, entertainment and food planned for the whole weekend. To learn more about the route, visit the event website.
As well as beautiful countryside, scenic views and local wildlife in abundance, the 100-mile route offers plenty of interesting sites for riders and spectators to stop at before and after the Etape Royale event:
Ballater, in the Cairngorms National Park, boasts beauty spots such as Craigendarroch hill, Loch Muick, Lochnagar and the River Dee. Rhynie is home to eight Pictish symbol stones, where archaeologists have speculated the settlement may have been a royal site occupied by Pictish kings. Dufftown is located on the banks of the rivers Fiddish and Dullan at the foot of the Conval Hills. Whisky is the heart and soul of Dufftown, so make sure you try a dram or two while you’re there!
Hilton Coylumbridge is a one-and-a-half-hour drive to Ballater and Rhynie, and a one-hour drive to Dufftown. The hotel is set within the majestic Cairngorms National Park and is surrounded by rugged Highland countryside, outdoor adventures and family-friendly activities. If you’re heading to the Cheviot Etape Royale event next weekend, stay at Hilton Coylumbridge and enjoy a range of restaurants and bars, comfortable rooms and much more.
