The top 6 things to do in aviemore this winter
We may be slightly biased, but we’re pretty sure that Aviemore is the perfect year-round destination for a break. It may be winter, but there are still plenty of things to do when paying a visit to one of Scotland’s most beautiful and fascinating areas. We’ve compiled our own list of the top 6 things to do in Aviemore this winter.
The Hilton Coylumbridge is the closest hotel to the Cairngorm slopes, which offer one of Scotland’s best skiing experiences. Day tickets or season passes are available, meaning that you can even plan more than one trip this winter! If somebody in your party isn’t a ski aficionado then there’s no need to worry. They can instead enjoy the views offered by Scotland’s only funicular railway and the mountain’s Ptarmigan Restaurant. There’s also a more unusual tourist attraction located on the mountain - the highest postbox in the British Isles! If you’re not confident about hitting the Cairngorms straight away, you can always practice your skills first on the hotel’s own dry ski slope.
For some of you, even skiing may not get the adrenaline pumping quite enough. Never fear though, another all-action winter sport option is available - snowboarding. CairnGorm Mountain is a great location for the sport, boasting a snowboard fun park that is suitable for all levels, from beginners up to seasoned experts. Britain’s best snowboarders are often to be found honing their skills on the mountain.
Speyside distilleries are among the most distinguished producers of Scotland’s national drink and there are no shortage of them to visit. The Strathspey Trail will allow visitors to take in the sights, smells and tastes of six working distilleries; Benromach, Glenfiddich, Glen Grant, Cardhu, Glenlivet, and Strathisla. If you are going to be visiting all six though, we do recommend that you sample responsibly.
Aviemore is surrounded by picturesque nature and scenery and there’s no reason not to enjoy it in the winter. Just make sure that you’re well wrapped up and that you follow the safety guidelines for any walk that you embark on. Whether you’re looking for the sights and fresh air offered by a forest walk (Glenmore Forest is only around six miles away), a lochside walk (Loch Morlich is in the heart of Glenmore Forest), or a mountain walk, Aviemore is the perfect location for you.
If all that walking in the fresh air has given you a thirst, we recommend a visit to Aviemore’s own Cairngorm Brewery. Established in 2001, the brewery produces beers ranging from the traditional to the more contemporary and innovative. If you’re not sure which of their products to sample, let us mention that Trade Winds has won Speciality Beer of Britain on three occasions! Tours of the brewery cost only £3 and run at 2.30pm from Monday to Friday during the winter. Weekend tours can also be arranged via advance booking.
Highland Wildlife Park
When better than the winter to pay a visit to the UK’s only polar bears? The Highland Wildlife Park is only 7 miles south of Aviemore and is home to an assortment of animals from the exotic to the local. As well as the polar bears you can also see Japanese macaques, a red panda, increasingly rare Scottish wildcats...and many other fascinating creatures too. The park is open from 10am to 4pm throughout the winter.
So what are you waiting for?
We’ve only managed to scratch the surface of all that Aviemore has to offer you this winter, but we hope that we’ve done enough to convince you that there’s something here for everyone. We haven’t even mentioned the activities on offer in the luxurious surroundings of the Hilton Coylumbridge itself, where you can enjoy yourself in the gym, swimming pool, or spa. That’s before enjoying a sumptuous meal in one of our fantastic restaurants and topping the evening off with a nightcap in one of our cosy fireside bars.
