A Family Guide to Leisure In Aviemore

Posted by Hilton Coylumbridge, May, 2015

Unsurprisingly, we’d happily recommend Aviemore as the ideal place for an idyllic family break at any time of the year. At the same time however, the spring season is perhaps the most rewarding and enjoyable of all to enjoy this uniquely beautiful corner of Scotland. The Scottish Highlands are once again bursting into life, the harsh winter weather has bid us all farewell (at last!) and there’s a near-tangible buzz in the air – it’s a feeling that has to be experienced to be believed!

A trip to Aviemore this May is just the thing for the whole family to blow off the cobwebs and prepare for all the wonderful delights of the Great British summer. So, if you and the kids are giving thought to heading our way over the next few weeks, here’s a quick look at our top-pick activities for family fun and frolics:

Loch an Eilein

The spectacle of Loch an Eilein really is something else. Nestled in the forest of Rothiemurchus and home to a stunning 13th century castle, it won’t take you long to realise why this place was voted the number-one picnic spot in the whole of the UK! You’ll find yourself taking a step back in time and writing the pages of your own history book, as red squirrels and Scottish crossbills vie for your attention left, right and centre. Captivating just doesn’t come into it - Loch an Eilein is wholly unmissable.

Strathspey Railway Experience

One of our absolute favourites throughout the year, there’s something extra special about taking in the sights of the Cairngorms National Park by way of the Strathspey Railway during the spring. A wide variety of special events and weekend experiences are on offer throughout May, though there’s really nothing quite like an idyllic afternoon soaking up the sights of nature’s finest Scottish treasures – extraordinary fun for adults and kids of all ages.

For a slightly more action-packed family experience, nearby Treezone ticks all the right boxes. For kids of seven years old and above, there’s nothing quite like climbing high up into the tress to tackle the two adrenaline-charged assault courses, which will see them swinging, zipping and flying through the trees like nobody’s business. Of course, it’s all 100% safe and fully supervised, but this doesn’t make it any less of a non-stop thrill ride!

Cairngorm Mountain

It’s not every day you get to take to kids to the summit of a real mountain – especially one that’s serviced by the highest funicular railway service in the United Kingdom! To say that the views from the top of Cairngorm Mountain are spectacular would be an understatement, but even if the weather’s not on your side, you’ll get to dine in the UK’s highest restaurant and take home a few brilliant souvenirs from the gift shop.

Aviemore Spy Mission Treasure Trail

Last but not least, let the kids step into the shoes of their favourite detectives with a trip to the Aviemore Spy Mission Treasure Trail. Over the easy to traverse 1.75 marked walk, you’ll be challenged to uncover a series of clues and secrets in order to successfully complete your mission – an ideal afternoon out during the spring season.
