Aviemore's Top 10 Summer Activities
Struggling to find somewhere that offers all of the scenery, activities and facilities that you need to keep the entire family happy on holiday? Worry no more, we’re about to bring you our list of the top ten things to do in Aviemore this summer. We’re confident it will convince you that this is the place to spend your family holiday!
1) Take a walk in the fresh Cairngorms air
It may not sound too exciting but we can guarantee that a lungful of mountain air from our location in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park will help to put a real spring in your step. There are so many sights to see, whether you fancy enjoying the beautiful woodland walk from the hotel to Rothiemurchus estate’s Loch an Eilein (voted Britain’s best picnic spot) , having a wander by the River Spey or enjoying one of CairnGorm Mountain’s organised walks.
2) Go for a cycle to Loch Morlich
As well as on foot, Aviemore is also a fantastic location to explore on two wheels. Bikes to suit the whole family are available to hire from within the resort at Outdoor Discovery, with other accessories such as helmets, carts and tag-a-longs also available. Why not cycle from the hotel to picturesque Loch Morlich? A complete route around the loch and back again is just over ten miles.
3) Enjoy the view from CairnGorm Mountain’s funicular railway
A ride on Scotland’s only funicular railway is an experience not to be missed, particularly when it offers such spectacular views! The railway takes you to CairnGorm Mountain’s Top Station, which is 3,500 feet up the mountain and allows you a spectacular panoramic outlook across the Cairngorms. Sending postcards? Why not take the opportunity to post them from the UK’s highest postbox?
4) Let the kids enjoy the magic of our Fun House!
Our Fun House is located within the hotel’s own grounds and is a fantastic place for kids to relax and enjoy themselves in a safe and friendly setting. It has a soft-play treehouse (with ball-pits!), a maze of slides and tunnels that are set over 3 floors. If that’s not enough, we also have a video-game arcade, mini-golf (part inside and part outside) and 10-pin bowling! You can relax and enjoy the fun from our American Diner...if you can stop yourself from joining in with the fun that is!
5) Ride the rails with the Strathspey Railway
The Strathspey Railway offers a fantastic chance to step back in time to the wonders of the steam age. The kids will love stepping aboard one of their vintage steam engines...almost as much as you will! Stunning views of the Cairngorms and the River Spey only add to the wonder of a very special experience.
6) Find adventure at Landmark
Landmark Forest Adventure Park has won both a Visit Scotland Thistle Award and a Daily Mail readers award for The Perfect Family Day Out. It’s great for kids who love to stay active and features rock climbing, high wire courses and a flume ride! This year the park has opened two new attractions within its grounds, ‘The Lost Labyrinth’ and ‘WonderWood - where nothing is normal’, ensuring that it remains a can’t-miss day out for the whole family.
7) Highland Wildlife Park
When you think about a stay in Scotland’s Highlands, you probably think about the wildlife that you might see. Ospreys? Red squirrels? Capercaillies? All possible. How about polar bears, Amur tigers and red pandas? Well, pay a visit to the Highland Wildlife Park and you may just be in luck! Daily feeding talks mean that you can watch the animals eating and have the opportunity to find out more about them from the knowledgeable keepers.
8) Relax in the Thai Lodge Spa
By the time you’ve done numbers 1-7 with the family then you’ll definitely have earned a little bit of pampering! Thankfully, the hotel’s grounds offer the tranquil escape of the Thai Lodge Spa. There you can relax in the hands of one of our expert therapists who will be able to ease away any stress, anxiety or tension. Massages, scrubs, facials and more are all available.
If Wimbledon puts you in the mood to pick up a racket this summer then you’re in luck. We have our own two fenced floodlit courts which are ideal for playing a few sets, whether you’re a beginner or the next Andy Murray! We also have tennis equipment available for hire and changing rooms and lockers are available in the hotel’s leisure centre.
10) Relax in the Woodshed Bar
Our log cabin-style bar is family-friendly and the ideal place to unwind after an active day, with children welcome up to 8pm when accompanied by an adult. The Woodshed offers snacks, light bites and a selection of Scottish beers and spirits. It’s also a great place to catch major sporting events - we’ll be showing World Cup games and matches from Wimbledon on our screens. If you prefer to sit outside then the bar’s suntrap terrace provides an ideal spot in which to enjoy a refreshing drink or one of the bar’s regular barbecues.
