Exciting Aviemore Activities for a Snow-Light Winter
It’s a well-known fact that snow cover in Scotland can be at the mercy of our changeable climate. Last year was a whopper for the white stuff and ski resorts were open for business until the late month of April, but that might also mean that this season will be a light one for snow.
Without dashing your hopes for a white Scottish Christmas, we’re giving you a taster of what you can do in Aviemore when the weather doesn’t comply. And if you care about the environment and want to get involved with a great cause for protecting winters in the UK, look no further than this charity which is doing a fantastic job at conserving the pretty powder that characterises our coldest season.
The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd
Even when the snow’s away, reindeer in the Cairngorms come out to play. This free-wheeling herd of reindeer roams the mountains and spreads its sweet, carefree vibe to all visitors and admirers.
The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd averages about 150 reindeer split between the Cairngorm mountains and the Glenlivet Estate, with a daily guided hill trip available throughout winter except for the harsher period of January to early February.
Highland Wildlife Park
This one needs no introduction if you’re familiar with our area but if you still haven’t grabbed the opportunity to spend a day here, this winter’s your chance. Wearing the feat of the UK’s first polar bear cub in 25 years like a proud medal, the Highland Wildlife Park is an animal haven situated just 7 miles south of Aviemore.
Catch a glimpse of the Amur tiger (the world’s largest feline), the European grey wolf (a silver-maned beauty), Japanese macaque (the cuddly snow monkey), red panda (a strikingly-coloured, endangered mammal), arctic foxes and the stunning snow leopard. If you want to make your outing extra special, consider becoming a keeper for a day.
Strathspey Railway Santa Express
With a wee pinch of make-believe, you can join Santa on his yearly voyage. The Strathspey Railway Santa Express is a Cairngorms classic. Few things beat the folding landscapes of the National Park rising and stretching out in front of your very eyes as you travel across plains flecked by snow or expecting it.
With the Christmas season around the corner, this cosy mini-trip feels like being in a festive movie. The service will be operating throughout December and you can book a first-class compartment accommodating up to 6 people with treats, drinks and gifts delivered by Santa himself. Watch a teaser of the experience here and get ready to dive into the storybook version of Christmas!
You might think otherwise but sledging doesn’t require a snow pack to be super. Even on dry ground, this fun sport is the right ingredient to complete your Highlands adventure. Whatever the weather or the temperament, sliding down slopes comes with a high risk of addiction!
Grass sledging in Aviemore can be enjoyed by enthusiasts of all ages, sizes and aptitude. There’s never a boring moment in spectacular Aviemore!
