Experience the Thunder in the Glens
Since it was devised in 1993 and first held in 1994, the Thunder in the Glens (TITG) motorbike rally has become one of the biggest events in the UK motorcycling calendar. Thousands of bikers from across the UK, Europe and beyond will be descending upon Speyside once more this year and riding out in all their splendour. This year the event takes place over the weekend starting on Friday the 22nd of August and runs through to Monday the 25th of August.
What’s the history of the event?
The event is organised by the Dunedin HOG Chapter. HOG stands for Harley Owners Group and the Dunedin Chapter are one of only two officially HOG affiliated chapters in Scotland. It’s run as a not-for-profit private members club and membership does require initial membership of the HOG (non-members of the chapter are welcome to register to take part in rallies like Thunder in the Glens). In 1993, one of the chapter’s members, George ‘Mad Dog’ McGuire, set up Thunder in the Glens and the first one was held in 1994, in Ayrshire. These days the event is held on Speyside instead, making use of the spectacular backdrop provided by the beautiful local landscape.
As well as being able to either take part in or watch the ride out, TITG’s programme each year also includes the chance to catch some live music performances. This year is no exception and headlining the musical side of things will be Doctor and the Medics (who hit the no.1 spot in the UK charts in the 1980s with Spirit in the Sky). On top of all that, whether you’re a budding biker or simply a fan, you’ll enjoy being around some of the UK’s most experienced bikers and having the chance to listen to their advice and their anecdotes.
With it being the 20th anniversary of the rally, this year is sure to be the biggest and best one yet! If you’re interested in finding out more about the history of this spectacular event and hearing from some of the figures who have been prominently involved in it over the years, then George McGuire himself has written a book to celebrate the 20th anniversary. It’s scheduled for release later in the year but is available to pre-order now.
How can you experience the thunder?
