How to Plan a Christmas Ski Break
It’s that special time of year again and many of you may be thinking about booking a break on the slopes over the festive period. We want to share our top tips on how to go about planning a Christmas ski holiday. Even if you have never been skiing or snowboarding before, the lure of snowy mountain peaks and the magic of feeling like you’re in Santa’s grotto makes a Christmas ski break the perfect choice.
DECIDE SKILL LEVEL OF GROUP
If you’re a novice skier stick to the nursery slopes until you gain confidence. More advanced skiers will be keen to try out black or red runs, so try to book somewhere that offers your party a range of slopes suited to all skill levels. Cairngorm Mountain is Scotland’s most popular ski destination and boasts 30km of ski runs which are sure to keep everyone happy.
It’s a good idea to take some professional lessons if you’re a beginner skier or even if you want to improve your skills. Hilton Coylumbridge has an on-site ski school, so you can begin learning before hitting the big slopes. The hotel also boasts a dry ski slope which is useful for beginners who want to test the waters before going out on the mountain.
Want to rent ski equipment? Hilton Coylumbridge offers a range of skiing and snowboarding gear as well as sledges. Be sure to book your item hire in advance to avoid disappointment. If you’re bringing your own equipment, we have an on-site secure drying room for you to keep your things.
After a long day on the pistes, you’ll want to soak up the cozy atmosphere by the log fire while sipping a warming hot toddy. At the Woodshed Bar, you’ll be spoiled for choice with an array of local Cairngorm ales, cocktails and, of course, local whisky.
BRINGING THE KIDS
If you have children, an important consideration is whether the resort you choose will be suitable for them. Hilton Coylumbridge has an on-site kids club so little ones can play while the adults relax with a glass of wine. The hotel’s indoor pool is a great attraction for kids as is our fantastic extended playpark.
THAT CHRISTMAS FEELING...
There is no doubt a ski break is even more magical over the Christmas period and you’ll want to ensure there are festive activities for the whole family to enjoy. At Hilton Coylumbridge, you can take winter walks in the surrounding forest and gather around the log fire in the Woodshed Bar. The whole family will be enchanted when Santa and his reindeer come to visit the hotel. Enjoy a spectacular Christmas Day dinner in the Inverdruie Restaurant followed by evening entertainment, with special events planned for the kids too. To top it all off, there will be a fireworks extravaganza.
Winter breaks can be difficult to plan, especially when changeable weather is thrown into the mix. Be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave and plan accordingly. Hilton Coylumbridge is just a 4-minute drive from Aviemore railway station (with direct links to Glasgow and Edinburgh) and under an hours' drive from Inverness airport.
If you’re travelling with young children, you may want to book one of our family suites which offer a separate room with bunk beds. If you’re travelling with a baby, our family rooms can accommodate a cot which can be provided complimentary to avoid you packing the kitchen sink! Choosing a hotel with on-site activities and entertainment means you have everything at your fingertips. A crucial consideration is the distance from the slopes to where you are staying. Hilton Coylumbridge is the closest hotel to CairnGorm Mountain and has the added benefit of a regular bus, which takes you to the ski resort and back.
Before you go, be sure to check mountain conditions or visit the hotel leisure desk for more information. You can also buy discounted ski passes when you arrive at the hotel for the Cairngorm Mountain, at our Leisure Desk.
