The best ways to enjoy spring in aviemore
Why Aviemore for spring?
The winter will soon (fingers crossed) be behind us, so what better to do with your time than to get out into the great outdoors and start enjoying some natural sights, sounds and, of course, some fresh air? If you’re looking for the perfect place to appreciate all of these then the town of Aviemore is the ideal location, lying within the Cairngorms National Park, one of the UK’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty. Of course, we may be slightly biased when we say that!
Let us take you through the wonderful springtime options afforded by a stay with us. We think we may just convince you that we’re right.
Take a walk among the magnificent ancient pines of Rothiemurchus forest
The forest at Rothiemurchus Estate covers an area of around 30 square kilometres and is a remnant of the vast Caledonian Forest that once covered huge swathes of ancient Scotland. The Caledonian Forest is even thought to be referred to in Arthurian legend, as the site of one of Arthur’s twelve battles is named Cat Coit Celidon. These days, a walk in the forest still means being surrounded by living history, with some of its iconic Pines believed to be over 300 years old.
A walk through the forest also gives the chance to spot a wide variety of wildlife, including a few increasingly rare species. The capercaillie is now on the species action list, due to the breeding population declining significantly over the past 25 years, while the forest is also home to the native red squirrel. Red squirrel numbers have been declining due to the impact of the non-native grey squirrel, so the chance to enjoy these animals in their native habitat should not be missed.
Spend some time by the water, or on the water
Aviemore is rich in opportunities for both watersports and fishing, being handily placed for the Spey and Druie rivers, as well as Loch Morlich and Loch Insh. Loch Morlich’s watersports will re-open for the year over Easter, while Loch Insh’s watersports centre is already open for the year and offers wind surfing, sailing, kayaking, and open canoeing. If these activities seem a little bit on the strenuous side for your tastes then why not relax with a riverside walk along the banks of the Spey or the Druie, or enjoy a day of tranquillity, fishing for some of Speyside’s revered salmon? Rothiemurchus estate also boasts Loch an Eilein (meaning ‘Loch of the Island’), once voted Britain’s Best Picnic Spot.
Breathe in that fresh mountain air
The Cairngorms are one of Britain’s most spectacular mountain ranges, if not the most spectacular. Whether you’re planning on just taking a walk through the range or your ambitions extend to some full-on mountaineering, you’re in for a treat. Stunning scenery, an impressive array of wildlife, and fresh air that we can never do justice to in print. You’ll just have to visit for yourself and find out. You may even find yourself being truly inspired by spending time in the mountains. It was while walking in the Cairngorms in 1964 that Professor Peter Higgs first had the idea about symmetry-breaking in the electroweak theory that led to the search for and eventual discovery of the Higgs boson particle by the CERN laboratory in Switzerland. Perhaps you can come up with a globally-significant idea while visiting too!
Get on your bike...or hire one
Both adult and child bikes are available for hire within our resort, from Outdoor Discovery. They offer a great opportunity to explore all of the wonderful sights that we’ve mentioned so far, as well as venturing into Aviemore itself or perhaps testing your stamina a bit more with a cycle to the picturesque village of Carrbridge, around ten miles from the hotel. Time things correctly and you can get the train back if you’re tired! In fact, you can also get on your bike to go straight from the hotel grounds to Loch Morlich or Loch an Eilein, making use of woodland cycle paths that will take you via some wonderful scenery along the way.
Have we convinced you?
We’ll never be able to sell Aviemore to you as well as a visit to the area itself will, so why not see for yourself and let us look after you while you do?
