Thunder in the Glens: Feel the Racing Heart of Scotland
We all associate the Scottish Highlands with peace and quiet away from the hum-drum of urban life, but what if we told you that this countryside portrait gets toppled on its head one weekend every year? True story!
The much-awaiting roar is rumbling closer: we’re just two weeks away from the 2018 edition of Thunder in the Glens. This is the “biggest and best chapter run rally in Europe” – an unmissable Harley-Davidson rally extravaganza that rounds up fearless bikers in a freedom-filled setting that gets their hearts and imaginations racing, along with the rest of us.
Legends at Lightning Speed
Harley-Davidson needs no introduction. It’s passion for motorbikes, racing and class rolled into one amazing package with a capital P. And the organisers of this Scottish rally couldn’t have chosen a better ingredient for their Harley-fuelled enthusiasm – the infinite horizons of the Scottish wilderness make the biker’s dream a reality.
Thunder in the Glens has racked up a sizeable, dedicated following since its establishment by Dunedin Chapter of the Harley Owners Group in Edinburgh. The first event was held way back in 1996, and despite the cultish adoration of Harley bikers, the rally is open to all motorcyclists.
The occasion pulls in people from every part of the world, some of them making a long journey to express their admiration of the iconic brand and the community keeping it alive and rockin’. Of course, the splendour of the Cairngorms National Park at the height of summer might be more than enough to spur them onwards. As they say: if you’ve got it, flaunt it!
Motorbikes that Marvel
Even if you’re not a member of the Harley-Davidson group, this is a show you simply have to experience. The badass, rock’n’roll gang zips their way from the starting point in Aviemore to Grantown on Spey at the finish line. The infectious vibe is clear: the rally began with 200 participants in its first edition and exploded into a 4,000-strong biker feast in 2016, marking the 20th anniversary of the event.
You can meet and chat with some of the most diehard Harley bikers in the world, as well as watch them do their thing. Some fine Harley-Davidson models will be on display, including rarities that are brought specifically to exhibit, and you’ll have the opportunity to test drive bikes and appreciate their immaculate design and mechanics.
The rally has become so popular that it’s garnering somewhat of a festival feel. RPJ Band and Gun are amongst the confirmed acts that will be complementing the main motorbiking attractions, and supporting bands are also lined up. Local charities will have stands at the event and many great causes will be benefiting from the proceeds, so don’t hesitate to lend your support.
