What to Do in Aviemore When it’s Raining
As in the rest of Britain, it can get a bit wet and miserable in Aviemore and the Highlands during autumn and winter. But not to worry, it doesn’t mean that your holiday or short break is ruined – there are plenty of things to do in the area that doesn’t involve you getting soaked! Here are a few of our favourite activities for a rainy day.
Sample Scottish Whisky at a nearby distillery
Make a rainy day special by visiting one of Scotland’s many distilleries and learning more about our national drink and one of our oldest industries. Only a short drive from Aviemore is the famous Dalwhinnie distillery and one of the highest distilleries in Scotland, Tomatin. The Speyside region where half of all Scottish distilleries can be found, including the world-famous Glenfiddich distillery, is also just a short car-ride away.
Indulge at the Thai Lodge Spa
If you like being pampered (who doesn’t?) you won’t even have to leave the hotel grounds, just head to our tranquil Thai Lodge Spa for a nice soothing treatment of your choice and forget about the fact that it’s raining. Get nice and relaxed with one of our utterly calming massages, try a body scrub or a rejuvenating facial. We’ve also got a range of waxing treatments as well as manicures and pedicures on offer. Finish your pamper session with a “well-deserved” drink in our cosy Woodshed Bar.
Get aboard the Strathspey Steam Railway
An excellent way for both adults and children to spend a wet day is to enjoy a spectacular train journey on the historic Strathspey Steam Railway. The train departs from Aviemore station and takes you on a 20-mile round trip along the original Highland Railway – an excellent opportunity to take in the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands! You can also choose to have a meal on board; from afternoon tea to Sunday lunch and a five course fine dining experience. They even do whisky tastings on board.
Try some exciting Highland ales
If you’re into your beers you don’t have to go far to find an award-winning brewery. The Cairngorm Brewery Company is located in Aviemore and brews traditional ales as well as ales with an exciting fresh twist. The brewery is open to the public and arranges tours on Saturdays and Sundays where you can sample some of these exquisite Highland beers. There is also an onsite shop that is open Monday to Saturday in winter.
Shop till you drop at the Eastgate Shopping Centre
Everyone knows that a bit of retail therapy is acceptable when it’s raining outside. With over 70 stores, cafes and restaurants, the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness is definitely worth the one-hour drive from Hilton Coylumbridge.
Visit the Highland Wildlife Park
The Highland Wildlife Park just seven miles south of Aviemore is home to Scottish wildlife and endangered species from around the world. Some exciting animals that live in the park include Amur tigers, polar bears, camels, bison and snow monkeys. As you drive around the main reserve you won’t have to worry about getting soaked. There is also a walk-around area, so make sure to pack your umbrella and dress accordingly if you want to visit that part too.
