Your Guide to Hiking in the Cairngorms

Posted by Planning a hiking trip to the Cairngorms? Check out our guide to hiking in the Cairngorms. Why not book at our Aviemore Hotel today?, February, 2015

Here at the Hilton Coylumbridge, we’re firm believers that the Cairngorms National Park is no less than the finest of its kind in the UK. Of course, being based here you could say we’re a little biased on the subject, but we absolutely guarantee that even a short stroll in the majestic wonders of the area will have you thinking exactly like we do.

For avid outdoors types and newcomers to such pursuits alike, hiking in the Cairngorms is quite simply a delight like no other and one that you can take complete advantage of suring your stay at our Aviemore Hotel.

What’s perhaps most appealing about the area is the way in which there is very much something for everyone…if you’re pardon use of the cliché. Aviemore represents the primary town of the area and thus serves as a central hub providing access to everything the Cairngorms National Park has to offer. The region is in general much less rugged than the Western Highlands, but what it may lack in outright drama it more than makes up for in enchanting beauty.

We’re also delighted to say that the Cairngorms National Park is very much a year-round destination, offering a world of outdoor pursuits throughout the summer and unrivalled cross-country ski trails during the winter. Even if you’re not exactly out to challenge yourself and would rather simply soak up the spectacle of nature as only Scotland can do it, you’ll find what you’re looking for right on your doorstep.

An Epic Array of Routes

When it comes to choosing a specific route for yourself, your walking group or the family as a whole, we strongly suggest investing in a good guide book. The web is of course packed with all manner of useful information and some of the hiking community’s own less-discovered routes and trails, but nothing tends to be more reliable than a good book from an authoritative source.

Whatever it is that takes your fancy, you’ll find it here. Whether it’s a gentle half-hour stroll around one of the country’s most stunning lochs, a five-mile ramble across more demanding terrain or something of a day-long journey of deep exploration, the Cairngorms National Park has been covered in detail by some of the UK’s most dedicated and respected hikers. Armed with a map to guide you and a few photographs to inspire you, it’s simply impossible not to enjoy a uniquely rewarding experience.

Simple Safety

Regardless of how deeply you intend to throw yourself into your activities, nothing matters more when hiking in the Cairngorms than the safety of you and your group. Pretty much every walk and hike across the region is fully marked and mapped out, but taking along essentials like a map, compass and ideally a GPS is always a good idea. Also, never forget that Scotland doesn’t escape the Great British elements’ tendency to change at the drop of a hat – dress for the weather that may present itself at any time.

From deerstalking to bird watching to wonderful sailing jaunts on gloriously still lochs, a hike across the Cairngorms can be literally anything you want it to be. And when you’ve embraced Mother Nature and earned some peace and tranquility, what better place to unwind than our fabulous Aviemore hotel?
